Still serving: veteran volunteer Joan Eitzen featured in Veterans Life Magazine
Retired Army nurse continues her lifelong mission of caring for others through hospice volunteer service
Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care is proud to share that longtime volunteer Joan Eitzen has been featured in the June/July 2026 edition of Veterans Life Magazine.
Joan's story is one of dedication, leadership, and service. A retired U.S. Army Nurse Corps officer, she served from 1979 to 2006 in a variety of leadership positions across the United States and overseas. During her distinguished military career, she cared for service members and their families while leading large healthcare teams and helping shape military medicine.
Following her retirement from the Army, Joan continued her commitment to veterans through her work at the Denver VA Medical Center. She also found a meaningful way to continue serving through volunteer work with Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care.
For nearly 20 years, Joan has supported hospice patients and families, offering compassion, companionship, and understanding during some of life's most challenging moments. Her volunteer service reflects the same values that guided her military career: respect, presence, and a deep commitment to caring for others.
As a proud Level 5 We Honor Veterans partner, Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care recognizes the unique experiences and needs of veterans facing serious illness. Through veteran-to-veteran volunteer programs, recognition ceremonies, and specialized training, we strive to ensure that every veteran receives the honor and support they deserve.
Joan's message to fellow veterans is both simple and inspiring: service still matters. Even after military retirement, there are countless opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others. We invite you to read Joan's full story in the June/July issue of Veterans Life Magazine and explore additional current and past issues at veteranslifemagazine.com.
