Palliative Pharmacy of Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care (PPHPC) opened Palliative Pharmacy of Pikes Peak in June 2003 to provide specialized pharmaceutical care for our hospice patients.  A notable feature of the pharmacy is the fact that we serve only hospice and palliative care patients, and consequently furnish the highest quality of care.  Hospice-related medications are covered as part of patient care at Pikes Peak Hospice.

Besides offering the expected services of a retail pharmacy (identifying drug interactions, equianalgesic dosing, answering therapeutic and pharmacology questions, and filling prescriptions), our staff has developed unique dosage formulations to address the care and challenges of hospice patients. We also provide anti-coagulation therapy management for our hospice patients on Coumadin.

Advantages of Dedicated On-Site Pharmacy:

  • Ability to quickly address patients’ changing needs to control pain and symptoms.
  • Medications can be ordered and ready before the patient arrives at the Pikes Peak Hospice Unit at Penrose Hospital, and can be delivered to patients in other settings by Pikes Peak Hospice Care Teams.
  • New medications and IVs can be delivered to patients quickly.
  • Preparation of patient-specific palliative compounded preparations, topicals, IVs, and other medications.
  • Pharmacists participate in daily Interdisciplinary Team meetings to address pharmaceutical issues.
  • The collegial approach at PPHPC facilitates cooperation between pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and patients to alleviate the patients’ most problematic symptoms.
