Investing in the next generation of healthcare professionals
At Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care, we believe that preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals is an important part of strengthening care in our community.
That is why we are proud to collaborate with the UCCS Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences to provide hands-on clinical experiences for future nurse practitioners.
Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner Abbie Noble recently served as a clinical preceptor for UCCS nurse practitioner student Megan Boire, mentoring her several days a week over the course of several months. Through her time with Abbie, Megan participated in palliative care visits and gained valuable firsthand experience with the role of a nurse practitioner in palliative care.
For Abbie, the opportunity to serve as a preceptor was particularly meaningful.
As a nurse practitioner student herself, Abbie remembers how challenging it could be to find clinical preceptors who could provide the experience and mentorship she needed to complete her education. Now that she is an established nurse practitioner, she wanted to give back by creating that same kind of opportunity for another future healthcare professional.
Clinical experiences like this provide students with much more than required clinical hours. They offer an opportunity to develop skills that will be essential throughout their careers, including communicating effectively with patients and families, understanding patient goals and becoming comfortable having conversations about end-of-life care.
Hospice and palliative care provide a unique environment for learning these skills because the focus extends beyond treating a medical condition. It is about understanding the whole person, listening to what matters most and helping patients and families navigate some of life’s most difficult moments.
These academic partnerships also offer an important opportunity to introduce future healthcare professionals to the work of hospice and palliative care right here in Southern Colorado. By providing students with meaningful local experiences, we hope to inspire them to build their careers in our community and continue caring for the people who call this region home.
